Legend

         During the California gold rush in 1870 Henri Labeau, a French goldsmith, got lost in the Black Hills of South Dakota. While struggling with dehydration and starvation he had fallen asleep, and had a dream he seen a mountain stream with grape vines growing on the banks. After he woke up, he walked over a rise and found the stream and grape vines just like he had dreamt.
          Out of gratitude he dedicated his life to creating jewelry in the shape of grape clusters and leaves styled in rose, green, and yellow gold.

History

        In 1849 during the California Gold Rush traders and artisans, some of which were emigrant jewelers, followed the booms throughout the west. They followed these gold strikes from California to Colorado, Montana, and lastly the Black Hills of South Dakota. These jewelers would craft their gold jewelry at the same camp it was mined from. The craftsman’s design of choice was inspired by the nature that surrounded them. What started with a single grape leaf expanded into clusters of leafs and fruit.
            The red and green gold wasn’t produced till it reached the Black Hills. Yellow gold and silver were alloyed together to create the green gold, and copper was alloyed with yellow gold to make the pinkish red gold.
            S.T. Butler is the man generally accepted as the father of Black Hills Gold Jewelry. He and Charles Barclay had started a jewelry business in Central City, South Dakota in 1878, led until 1896. Butler had fashioned the traditional design with red, green, and yellow gold using his old kerosene torch for soldering. Grape leaves, clusters, vines and more were all assembled by hand. The Black Hills Gold Jewelry established by S.T. Butler was in continuous production by his family for four generations after him.
